The Federal Reserve meets this week against a backdrop of political pressure, stubborn inflation, and market anticipation. For crypto investors, the question is straightforward: will interest rates finally start coming down, and if so, when?

For now, the answer looks to be not yet. Futures markets place the odds of a rate cut at this meeting at less than 5%, with policymakers expected to hold the federal funds rate steady in the 4.25% to 4.50% range. Chair Jerome Powell has repeatedly signaled that more progress is needed on inflation and labour market data before cutting, despite public calls from President Trump for the Fed to “start slashing interest rates.”

If not this week, when? Markets currently assign about a 60% chance of a quarter‑point cut in September, and most Fed officials expect at least two cuts before the end of the year. That means investors could see a shift in monetary policy by autumn, provided inflation continues to cool and trade related uncertainties don’t spark another spike in prices.

Crypto markets thrive in environments of abundant liquidity and low opportunity cost. High interest rates make holding non-yielding assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum relatively less attractive, as investors can earn solid returns from Treasuries or money market funds. The Fed’s current stance of holding rates higher for longer has contributed to subdued speculative flows and intermittent volatility across the digital asset market.

A pivot to lower rates could flip that dynamic. Cheaper borrowing costs and lower Treasury yields tend to weaken the US dollar and push investors further out on the risk curve, benefiting high volatility assets, including crypto.

Bitcoin, in particular, has historically responded strongly to easing cycles, often serving as both a hedge against currency debasement and a speculative growth bet.

There’s also a structural element in play. The recently passed Genius Act paves the way for regulated stablecoins to hold reserves at the Fed, potentially integrating parts of crypto’s infrastructure with traditional financial plumbing. While the Fed has been cautious in approving only one of 39 crypto related applications so far, the legislative momentum points to a future where crypto and traditional finance interact more directly.

For now, crypto investors should watch the Fed’s tone. A steady hand this week means little immediate change, but a shift later this year could open the door for renewed risk appetite and a very different market landscape.
