2025 has tested markets in ways few could have predicted.

Trump’s appointment as US President brought a sense of optimism to global markets as investors anticipated high growth, low taxes and a focus on innovative driven sectors like AI and Crypto.

However, the optimism was short-lived. In February, the rise of Deepseek AI sent shockwaves through the US tech sector, catching investors and even industry leaders like OpenAI off guard. It was a stark wake up call that the AI race was far from over.

Markets unravelled further in March, as Trump rolled out his aggressive tariff playbook. Headlines and unpredictable negotiations with foreign governments whipsawed investor sentiment on a daily basis, injecting fresh volatility into an already fragile landscape.

And most recently, the widening conflict in the Middle East has left investors questioning whether the US could be on the brink of another war.

The common thread running through all of this is uncertainty. Markets hate uncertainty.

It erodes confidence, disrupts planning, and fuels volatility. It’s one of the reasons gold has performed so strongly, even outpacing the S&P 500 since early 2024. So, in a world defined by persistent uncertainty, accelerating currency devaluation, and a global government spending frenzy, investors have been searching for a new kind of asset. One that can act as a risk-on opportunity during the good times, but also stand as a defensive hedge in periods of instability.

It wasn’t long ago that Bitcoin and Ethereum were synonymous with volatility. Headlines declared them speculative bubbles, and news networks recited their eulogies on live TV. But today, they sing a different tune. Consider Bitcoin’s volatility index (BVOL), which has steadily declined to multi-year lows. Ethereum has followed a similar path, trading within tighter ranges even as dramatic macro events unfolded. While global equities swung violently on every geopolitical headline, BTC and ETH increasingly demonstrated their maturation as an asset class.

To appreciate this shift, look back to 2022, when investors faced a Federal Reserve determined to raise rates aggressively to tame runaway inflation. That year, the Nasdaq 100 plunged 32%, while Bitcoin collapsed by 64%, reinforcing perceptions of crypto as speculative and volatile.

Fast forward to the recent market turmoil. The Nasdaq 100 fell roughly 26% from peak to trough. This time, however, Bitcoin’s decline was far less severe by comparison, dropping about 32%. In other words, the gap in drawdowns has narrowed significantly over three years.

The trend is clear: Bitcoin is becoming less volatile relative to risk assets that were once considered more stable.

This shift isn’t accidental. It reflects structural maturation across the entire crypto landscape:

Institutional liquidity has deepened, with ETFs and ETPs channelling consistent flows into Bitcoin and Ethereum.

On-chain settlement volumes have surpassed those of major payment networks, underscoring real utility beyond speculation.

Regulatory clarity, though imperfect, has reduced existential uncertainty, particularly with the United States leading the way,

Crypto’s volatility is now comparable to mid-cap equities. For treasuries seeking diversification in a world of weakening fiat currencies and debt-laden balance sheets, this marks a profound change. Where once treasurers viewed digital assets as purely speculative, they are now increasingly seen as strategic hedges, both against monetary debasement and the fragility of traditional banking.
